My name is Shivon Carolina and I'm from New York. 2. What is your hair type? I believe I am 4a with some 3c.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I had my last relaxer in October 2011, transitioned for a year and then big chopped in October 2012. Honestly it started with me being curious and sort of following the crowd but ultimately turned into a somewhat spiritual journey and learning to accept myself as is (still working on that). 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing was the short-hair phase and not feeling as pretty or as feminine and accepting my hair with all its kinks as is. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I mainly do wash-n-goes. I will do a wash-n-go once per 1-1 1/2 weeks. I try to deep condition weekly. Every now and then I'll do the occasional ponytail/puff, braid-out or perm rod set. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Take off satin cap, spritz hair with a mixture of mostly water and a little leave-in conditioner and some type of oil (lavender, grapeseed, Argan, almond, etc.) then smooth edges with gel and let air dry. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Throw on satin cap and go to sleep. Or if a manipulated style - spritz hair with water and either re-braid or re-roll (yes I re-braid or re-roll every night lol). 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Very seldom, if I'm in a serious rush and I did a wash-n-go and my hair didn't fully dry, I'll diffuse on low heat or cool for a few minutes. Other than that - no. So far, it seems I straighten my hair (flat iron), twice per year.
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
If I'm wearing a braid-out yes - in several plats for as long as I'm rocking it. I never wear braids as a style though... 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Normally loose. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Ummm yes, perming my hair was a tragedy. I recovered by going back to natural (ha,ha). No really, in high school my hair was natural but I always wore it "pressed". I would either get it done professionally or do it myself. I had become what I thought was a "pro" until that one time when I was distracted and didn't test the hot comb on paper towel and put it directly in my hair...needless to say - comb was too hot and I burnt my hair off. I had short pieces, probably like 1/2 inch or shorter just sticking up and it was in the top middle area of my head. I had to try to comb my hair over it for a while but the short pieces would stick up through it. Once it got long enough I would do a little curl, just a slight bend to the pieces so that it could lay and blend with the rest of my hair, it eventually grew back lol. 13. Whitney Rene and I currently live in North Hollywood,CA 2. What is your hair type? I typically don’t categorize my hair by type because it hasn’t specifically helped me in my journey. BUT if I had to, I would say it’s 3C-ish.
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I have been fully natural since late 2005. Right before “going natural”, I had gotten my hair done by a new stylist. I wanted blonde highlights and a straight bob. Because I was young and didn’t know a lot about really taking care of my hair it started to break off severely. I had always had long, healthy hair before this so I stopped going to her and me and my sister started doing our own relaxers. I started noticing that I could get my hair just as straight no matter how much new growth I had so we would do our relaxers less frequently. At this time, I loved getting my hair cut/trimmed and one day I noticed the hair at the nape of my neck was starting to curl. My “going natural” journey was really natural. I didn’t intend on “going natural” and I’m pretty sure it didn’t even have a name at that point lol. But what I did know is that I didn’t need to put chemicals on my hair for it to do what I wanted it to do. I was still wearing my hair straight at this time and getting it cut regularly (I wore a bob for a while) which eventually led to me having no more relaxed hair! 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural?
The most challenging thing has been finding the right products and the right routine. Also, the amount of time it takes can get really hard. Having damaged, lifeless hair was so much easier! JK, but it’s really a commitment and like anything else—greatness takes time. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I’ve gotten my hair down to a science now. I know what it likes and what it doesn’t. And what it can handle, which is really important. I typically co-wash and deep condition (moisturizing conditioner every week, add protein conditioner every other week), twist outs are my go to style. I play around with the pattern and products I use. And I also alternate between rolling the ends on flexi rods and leaving my natural curl. I have also mastered my wash n go but it doesn’t last as long so I go for the twist out if I don’t want to have my hands in my head every couple of days. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I will add a little coconut oil or olive oil once I take off my silk scarf and I will use a handheld dryer to reshape my hair. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I usually just pineapple my hair and sleep with a silk scarf or bonnet. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use heat to deep condition and when I use a handheld dryer. I use the handheld to get the shape I want, stretch my roots a bit and to make it have that “not so perfect” look
9. Do you braid your hair? If so, how often do you do so in a year?
I will get my hair braided or twisted from time to time. Maybe twice a year, but it’s not a ritual. I do it when I really get the urge to cut or color my hair OR if I just don’t want to do it. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I am more of a Denman brush/tangle teaser girl. My hair doesn’t really like combs. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? 99.9% of the time my hair is loose. I love protective styles like braids and twists but sometimes the synthetic hair irritates my skin and that’s no good. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Not really a tragedy but have made several mistakes along the way. The biggest one recently was bleaching the ends of my hair right when I was really retaining good length. I already know my hair doesn’t respond well to bleach so I just cut those ends off myself and kept it moving. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I started transitioning in February of 2014 and big chopped in April of 2015 after 13 months of transitioning. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging part was getting used to caring for my hair at each stage (transitioning, post big chop) and figuring out which products and techniques worked best for my hair through trial and error. 5. What is your weekly regimen?
6. What is your daily morning regimen? Spritz with water based moisturizer if hair is dry, fluff with hands, separate more curls and go. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Spritz edges and apply shea butter before putting head scarf around them and silk cap over the rest of my hair 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I try not to use direct heat often on my hair so at the most I’ll use it once a year. Sometimes I’ll blow dry my hair on cool or low heat if I’m pressed for time.

I don’t usually braid my hair unless I’m doing a braid out, usually I’ll wear two strand twists as my protective style for half of the week and then rock a twist out during the weekend. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I love wide tooth combs for detangling with conditioner or moisturizer but I love denman brushes for defining my curls with my wash n gos. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Some weeks I go the whole time with my hair loose but lately I’ve been trying to wear it in protective styles more often (usually a few days a week) to see if it helps me maintain healthier ends. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I think my biggest hair tragedy would be when I was transitioning and I decided to straighten my hair and my already thin processed ends thinned out to an awful level. I ended up having to cut off between 4-6 inches of hair and it really made me stay away from heat during the rest of my transition. The positive side to it was that once the weight of the hair I cut came off, my curl pattern became more noticeable and it pushed me closer to being ready for my big chop. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip would be to be consistent with your hair regimen. Regular deep conditioning, moisturizing when needed and detangling can prevent excessive dryness/breakage and help your hair retain its length. 14. Where can we find you online? I haven't since I cut my hair and I don't intend to, so I guess I could say no.

I want cornrows SO BAD right now. But I typically do a protective style once a year. Last time I had Marley twists. A few years ago I decided to go blonde. I'm not sure what I was thinking but my hair became BONE STRAIGHT. I decided to go natural in 2014. At the time I had a really short haircut that I didn't like. I was just over my relaxed hair. A friend of mine was a couple of months natural and told me I should try being natural too and I did. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Honestly just being comfortable in my own skin. I cut my hair really low and was afraid I was going to look like a boy. Also figuring out what works for my hair texture and type. I'm still learning what works best for me. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I co-wash and deep condition once a week. When I'm styling my hair depending on the style I'll use gel or heavy butters. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Depending on the style for example a wash n go, I'll spray my hair with water give it a lil shake and be on my way. If I have extra time I like to sit under my hair steamer to get rid of the flatness and to provide extra moisture. If I'm wearing a twist out I'll just fluff my hair, lay down my edges and that's it. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night I'll re-twist my hair if needed with a little bit of product. Or I'll put my hair into mini pineapples, throw on my satin bonnet and go to sleep. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I've only used heat on my hair 2 times since being natural. One time when I wanted to stretch my hair and another time when I straightened it for my two year natural anniversary.

Looking into protective styling this summer. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Yes unfortunately. I tried to color my hair using a honey blonde dark n lovely hair dye and it ended up turning a orange uneven color. Yes I know your suppose to wait at least 2 weeks to dye your hair again but I just couldn't go around looking crazy. I dyed my hair at least 3 times that week just to get it back to normal. In the end I knew my hair would not recover from all the dye jobs I did in that one week so I big chopped again. Luckily I was only about 4 months natural since I big chopped so I didn't have to cut off a ton of hair. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip for maintaining healthy hair is moisture and most definitely patience. Learn what works for your hair and your texture. Even better find out what your hair porosity is. Knowing that alone can help you choose the right products to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy. Oh and one more thing always remember health or length. I decided to go natural in March 2012. I had decided to really fall in love with the natural curls that I was blessed with because I owed it to myself to feel and know that I was beautiful the way God had made me. 4. Combating Breakage, anxiety over hair growth (not growing fast enough or not the way I envision in my mind) and not comparing my hair journey with other naturals. 5. What is your weekly regimen? I deep condition weekly, I co-wash 2x per week. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I refresh my curls with water and a leave in conditioner and I mostly wear my hair in a wash n go. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I massage my scalp with coconut oil, I detangle with a leave in conditioner and or coconut oil and sleep on a satin pillow case. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I use direct heat VERY VERY SELDOMLY! I know what has helped a lot with the growth and health of my hair is staying away from direct heat as much as possible. I do use a bonnet dryer sometimes to set either my perm rod or flexi rod sets.

I do not leave my hair in braids however I do style my hair with a braid out set as a protective style and to elongate my curls. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth or even better for me my fingers, I find using my fingers to detangle is safer for my hair and they’re FREE 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Well, I didn’t get my first relaxer until I was 13 (2004) so I was well aware of my hair’s thickness and length potential. I kept up with my relaxed hair until 2011, and after 4 months of transitioning I did my first big chop (currently growing out big chop number 3 from 2014). I went back to natural because I was tired of my boring, straight hair. 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I didn’t/don’t find going natural challenging. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Depending on the week, I alternate between co-washing and shampooing. After cleansing my hair, I use the LOC method to retain moisture, and lastly I style my hair for the week. I’m really into braid outs at the moment. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Remove my satin bonnet, shake, fluff, and go! If needed, I’ll refresh my hair with a light mist of water and a light oil. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? I just stuff my loose hair into my satin bonnet most nights, but occasionally I will do medium to large braids or twists and then put on my bonnet or scarf. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Yes, but not often. I flat iron my hair once or twice a year.

Yes, I think braids are a great protective style. I may braid my hair two or three times within a year. I would like for it to be braided up more often, but it takes a while to do and I start to miss my hair soon after it’s braided (the struggle lol). 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide-tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is loose about 90% of the time. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? Find products and a regimen that works for you. As far as long hair, with health comes length. You have to be patient and not focus on the length of your hair. 3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I went natural in November 2015. I big chopped after transitioning for 11 months. Prior to going natural, I started to dislike my relaxed hair. That straight, damaged, lifeless mess was boring. I noticed that I loved the thick and natural curly look. Every naturalista I would see, I would compliment. Then I thought, what the hell! Girl, go natural! Never in a million years would I have believed I was hiding such beautiful curls! 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? Deciding to cut when I did. I originally planned to transition for a year and a half, but was tired of dealing with the two different textures whenever I would take a protective style out. So, I cut sooner than I planned. My hair was long all my life. So to go from long hair to basically a couple of inches of hair was shocking but I loved it. I embraced it and in the end was happy with the decision I made. Cutting my hair sooner allowed me to learn what products worked for me etc. Also, it helped step my makeup game up, lol… Couldn’t have a short 'do without a lightly beat face. 5. What is your weekly regimen? If my hair is not in a protective style (i.e. braids or cornrows) I deep condition once a week, do a wash&go and when it gets old I just wear my hair in a high bun for the remainder of the week. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Add a little water maybe leave conditioner to a previous wash&go, fluff hair out with my hands and last, add jojoba oil to seal in moisture. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? Throw a bonnet on and go to sleep. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? Only time I use heat is: before getting box braids (my hair gets blow dried before braiding), when deep conditioning (sitting under hooded dryer) and when I diffuse (low heat or cool setting).

I get my hair braided about 2-3 times a year. I leave braids in for no longer than 2 months. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? I use a wide-tooth comb when detangling in the shower. I purchased a denman brush but haven’t put it to use yet because my curls define when I rake leave-in conditioner in with my fingers. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? When it’s cold, in a protective style most of the time. When it's warmer I like to wash&go. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? No, I haven’t. Newly natural so… Was thinking about color but scared it will ruin my curl pattern. 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My name is Shar’del Haden and I am from White Plains, MD. At least that’s where I currently live! 2. What is your hair type? I am somewhere in-between a 3C and 4A, depends on the the day!
3. When did you go natural and what made you do it?
I stopped relaxing my hair about 3 years ago, but didn’t really start taking care of my natural hair until a year after that. The reason I stopped getting relaxers was because I started getting sew-ins. I didn’t see the point of relaxing my hair if i was just going to braid it up. What made me embrace my natural hair was really research. I started watching natural hair videos on youtube and thought Hey I can do that! So after that I let the naturalness take over! 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? I found figuring out the type of hair I have and what it needed was the hardest for me when going natural. After watching so many videos I had to think about that my hair needed. Seeing so many products made it a little hard to decipher what was good for my hair and what wasn’t. Trial and Error! 5. What is your weekly regimen? My weekly regimen is to make sure I co wash twice a week. I deep condition over night one of those days. The other day I use the baggy method overnight. I normally keep the styling easy. A twist out or wash n go. 6. What is your daily morning regimen? Most days Im in the house for the majority of the day. I just make sure I moisturize my hair at some point throughout the day. It’s almost always in a pineapple. So I spray some light leave-in in it and add my choice of oil for the day. 7. What is your daily night time regimen? At night, if its not a wash night for me, I moisturize and pineapple my hair. Very simple. I use my satin/silk scarf to pineapple it. Then I sleep on my satin/silk pillow case. 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? The only time I apply heat to my hair is when Im diffusing my wash n go. I use low warm heat, and I only do it for about 15-20 minutes. Then I allow it to dry on its own for the rest of the time.

I braid my hair probably once a year. It is normally during the beginning of the summer. 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Though I love my denman brush I have recently been using my wide tooth comb more often. I find the detangling to be mush easier and less fall out. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? My hair is normally loose. I enjoy the almost weightless feel of my hair on my head. lol 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? I’ve never really had something happen to my hair that was devastating. The closest thing to a tragedy I can think of is the condition of my hair before I started taking care of it correctly. It was the most driest I had ever felt and the ugliest if I so say so myself. Once I realized that just putting a wig over it was obviously not helping, I did some research and brought the right products for my hair. Best thing Ive ever done for my hair! 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? I know many naturals say this but MOISTURE MOISTURE MOISTURE! I can’t stress it enough. I went natural June 10, 2014. I was tired of my hair always breaking off, & I never got perms often but every 3 months maybe longer & one day I just noticed all the new growth I had & how pretty my curl pattern was & just decided to go natural. & I'm very happy I made that decision my hair has been the healthiest it has ever been 4. What was the most challenging thing about going natural? The most challenging thing about going natural was when I was transitioning for about 6 months, trying to maintain my natural curl pattern & also my transitioning ends. 5. What is your weekly regimen? Sunday is normally wash day for me, I like to co wash, with Shea moistures 10 renewal conditioner & deep condition with there raw Shea butter deep conditioner then style my hair either in a braid out, or twist out, using there curl enhancing smoothie & a little argan oil to last the whole week 6. What is your daily morning regimen? I like to just spray some type of oil on my hair to hydrate my hair for the day & head on out the door. I keep it simple 7. What is your daily night time regimen? For my night time routine I always mist my hair with a little bit of water mixed with Sheamoistures 10 renewal conditioner & rub a little oil on my hair & put my silk scarf on to protect my ends & I'm ready for bed 8. Do you use heat on your hair at all? I used heat on my hair once when I was 6 months natural but have not since then because my hair began to shed a whole lot.

I love braiding my hair. Protective styling has helped me so much with my hair growth journey. I braid my hair about 6 times a year. I like to do Marley braids & box braids 10. Wide-tooth comb or Denman brush? Wide tooth comb. 11. Is your hair normally loose or in a protective-do? Equal I like to protective style & also let my fro out. 12. Have you ever had a hair tragedy? What was it? How did you recover from it? When I got my hair straightened for the first time I had some heat damage. But I really took care of my hair constantly deep conditioning twice a week & treating my hair like a baby, keeping it moisturized & I have no more heat damage & so glad I didn't have to cut my hair to recover from it 13. What's your biggest tip for maintaining healthy or long hair? My biggest tip is deep conditioning, I think deep conditioning is super important for keeping your hair moisturized & giving it all the nutrients that it needs.
